    Review of Frankfurt Book Fair

TEHRAN, Oct. 29--A specialized meeting on children’s books from Muslim countries at the Frankfurt International Book Fair was held on the sidelines of Light and Supplication Festival which is currently underway here.
A press release by the Public Relations Department of the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults said that at the event, Mostafa Rahmandoust, children poet, Seyyed Ali Kashefi Khansari and Hamid Reza Shahabadi, both authors of children’s books, discussed the entries at the 57th Frankfurt International Book Fair.
At the meeting, Shahabadi pointed to modernized publishing industry in Europe and said that the new method for publishing books calls for printing according to demand.
“In this case, the books will not accumulate in stores,“ he said, adding that they first sell the books and then supply it to the market.
Rahmandoust told the gathering, “Fifteen years ago when I took part in Italy’s Bologna International Book Fair, no third world country even thought of approaching the level attained by Iranian children literature.
“This year, we ranked first but we have rivals. If we do not draw up proper plans, the rivals will overtake us in the coming years,“ he cautioned.
Turning to the book reading programs in Egypt, Rahmandoust said that the Egyptians do not have as many libraries as we have but they organize ’Read to Your Child’ events to promote book reading among the public.
Describing children’s literature as a means of forging communication with other countries without taking political considerations into account, he pointed out that children are not politically-minded and children and young adults’ literature can overcome the obstacles.
The absence of translated versions of Iranian books, even at the introduction level, was a weakness of Iranian publishers, he complained.
Kashefi Khansari told the gathering that a pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair was allocated for religious literature from Muslim countries but neither Iran nor any other Muslim country was present and only Christian propagators were active there.

    Priests Wrote First Children’s Books

TEHRAN, Oct. 31--Religious leaders and priests were the authors of the first books for children and young adults in Iran.
Expressing this view, Ali Kashefi Khansari, a researcher of literature for children and young adults, further said at a seminar on ’History of Publishing Religious Books for Children and Young Adults’ that books for children have been published in Iran ever since printing industry was established in the country with the import of machinery from abroad, said a press release by the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA).
He said that experts disagree about when the first book for children was published in Iran because childhood was defined differently in various periods of history. “For this reason, it is impossible to give an exact date when the first book for children was published in Iran.“
The seminar was held on the sidelines of ongoing festival on ’Light and Supplication’. He said that a book called ’Ali’ is widely considered to be the first religious book printed in Iran. It was published in 1937 and reprinted several times and was named after the then prime minister Ali Khan Aminoddoleh, he added.
He said that religious lessons were also incorporated in text books of modern schools particularly in Persian language books.
Kashefi said that the oldest index of books was written by Abd Al-Vahab Motamed-oddoleh who lived during the reign of the Qajar king Nasser-eddin Shah.
According to the index, a total of 338 titles of books were printed in that era except for 47 titles of books which were printed in Isfahan, Tabriz and abroad in Persian language. Some 10 percent of the books were for children and the young adults.
